28 May 2013 | Opening of the largest solar energy installation in the Brussels Region

3.6 MWp installation supplies the equivalent power consumed by more than 1000 households

 Vorst (Brussels), 28 May 2013 – Eneco and Eoluz, both of which specialise in green energy supply, have developed and built the largest solar energy installation in the Brussels region on the roof of the Audi plant in Vorst. The 3.6 MWp (megawatt peak) installation on a roof surface of 37,000 m² was officially commissioned today in the presence of the EU Commissioner for energy Günther Oettinger and Brussels Minister of Energy and Environment Evelyne Huytebroeck. Audi Brussels will use all the solar energy generated locally. Eoluz, which developed the project and designed and built the installation, will also see to the monitoring and maintenance for the coming years. Eneco, 100% sustainable energy supplier and generator, acts as manager. This is an important step for Eneco in the Brussels market on the generation front.

Head start through sustainability

For Audi Brussels, the input of green energy constitutes an essential component of its continuous effort for sustainable and efficient car production. Not only are the cars that roll off the production line the most ecological on the market, but the plant itself applies very high environmental standards.

The company had been awarded two stars by the Brussels Region already in 2000 as one of the first Brussels companies to engage in ecodynamic entrepreneurship. Since 2003, the plant has been accorded the highest marks of the regional environmental certificate without interruption: 3 stars. Furthermore, the site has had Environmental Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) certification from the European Commission, and since 2012 also ISO 50001 certification (Energy management).

The installation makes it possible to reduce annual CO2 emissions yet again by 2 222 tonnes. That is the equivalent of more than 22 million automobile kilometres per year. In addition to the sustainability effort, in commissioning this installation Audi Brussels also demonstrates its long-term commitment to car manufacturing in Belgium.

Generating energy locally and sustainably together

Eneco has invested heavily in local and sustainable electricity generation in Belgium in recent years. Today, 43% of its green energy in Belgium is generated via wind, sun and biomass. By 2016, Eneco wants to be the most sustainable energy supplier in the country, with 100% sustainable electricity generated in Belgium.

"I am proud to be able to work together with Audi. I can only applaud that Audi has opted to generate energy through solar panels. The electricity thus generated is equivalent to the annual energy needs of more than 1000 households. This is fully in line with the vision of Eneco, which is striving for 100% sustainable energy supply in Belgium,” said Paul Minjauw, Managing Director Solar of Eneco. “I look forward to more such sustainable projects with companies and private individuals in the future, including on the Brussels market.”

Eoluz worked together with inter alia converter producer SMA and module manufacturer REC. Following the development of this project and the installation of more than 14,000 solar panels, Eoluz will see to the monitoring and maintenance of the solar energy installation at Audi Brussels in the coming years. Proactive maintenance is actually of capital importance for securing optimal efficiency for the installation.

Estimates show that 1 out of 2 PV installations in Belgium are maintained scarcely or non-systematically. A plant such as Audi Brussels can, however, generate 10% more, provided it is properly optimized and monitored,” says Jan Brouckaert, General Manager of Eoluz.

PV-friendly climate in Brussels

To achieve the climate goals, Belgium has to continue to invest in sustainable energy sources. In addition to wind, solar energy will also be needed in the coming years to bring this changeover about. The Brussels-Capital Region today provides an investment-friendly climate so that companies can green actively. For Brussels, in particular, this is a significant step towards achieving the ambitious goal of generating 8% green energy by 2020.

“With its project, Audi Brussels shows that there is a fine and cost-effective future for industrial PV systems in Belgium. And that is a piece of good luck for the PV sector in particular, which has not always had it easy in recent years,” Jan Brouckaert concludes.

15 May 2013 | High increase in PV-activity in Brussels Region

Since te announcement by the Brussels government of the amendment of the green certificate scheme for photovoltaïc systems there has been frantic activity in the solar sector in the Brussels Region.

Following the Ministerial decision on 2 May 2013, which made the amendment official, numerous industrial solar-systems have been, or are being, installed, in an effort to complete the installations before 2 August 2013. From this date onwards the number of green certificates received for each generated MWh is lowerd from 4 to 2,4.
At the end of 2012 the total installed solar production capacity in Brussels reached 18 MWp. This is an increase of 63% compared to the 11 MW in 2011. This record will most certainly be surpassed in 2013.

1 May 2013 | Radiation data for April 2013

Although many people are convinced that spring is going to be skipped this year the month op April was in fact a normal one considering the amount of sun hours.  This is the conclusion after a comparison of the sun hours op April 2013 with those of previous years (source: RMI). So that should be a relief for most solar-system owners.  Now we just need to ramp up those temperatures a bit ..

14 January 2013 | Eoluz now integrates electric charging stations into its solar energy systems

The future is all about ‘smart grids’; the integration of solar panels, and other renewable energy sources, with charging capacity and users. For this reason we started integrating electrical charging station into our solar energy systems. At Eoluz we are conviced that electric mobility will become an ever larger part of the solution for our energy and mobility problems. Rudolf krebs, CEO of the EV department Volkswagen, said in April 2012 that in 3 years time electric vehicles will be cheaper than traditional combustion-engine vehicles.

  Picture: eStation-Smart, with RFID identification.

Output: 3-phase 400V AC, 32A (1 x 22 kW), also 1-phase 230V AC, 16A (1 x 3,7 kW)

The advantages of electric cars are considerable :

Environment

* 0 gr. CO2 emission
* 0 gr. emission of dust particles

Budget
* cost of charging = ± 3€/100km = 3 times less than combustion-engine
* maintenance cost  = ± 1€/100km = 3 times less than combustion-engine
* fixed costs = ± 7€/100km as opposed to ± 10€/100km for a combustion-engine
* 67% of the incoming energy is transmitted to movement (diesel engine = 20%)

Comfort
* silent on board and on the road

Integrating a charging system with a solar energy system reduces the cost of charging an EV even more. The cost/kWh of solar-produced electricity is considerably less than what you would pay your ‘traditional’ energy supplier.
Many of our industrial clients are interested in this solution for obvious reasons ; most employees drive ony 40-50 km to and from work. This is well within the range of an EV. Some companies also use EVs for their service departments, both on and off their production sites.

EVs share of the total car fleet

In Belgium there are about 200 electric charging stations (www.asbe.be). Current share of EVs in Belgium’s car fleet; 400 (11M inhabitants, 5-6M cars). ACEA and Febiac predict that by 2020 there will be 15.000 to 50.000 EVs in Belgium. The Netherlands already have 1.934 charging stations and 4.000 EVs (16,7M inhabitants, 7,7M cars). The champion, however, is Norway ; 3.200 charging stations and 7.000 EVs for 5M inhabitants !
